At some point, you realize that everyone is cared for but you.
The vet’s on your calendar. So is your husband’s cardiology follow-up, and your daughter’s orthodontist. You only appear every 4 to 6 months, for a haircut. And you missed the last one because something came up.
I get it. I’ve been there.
You are the heartbeat of your home. You need to be on the care list too.
This is wise stewardship, not indulgence. You know that every appliance and relationship needs to be maintained, but you forget about yourself. You are key. If you’re not kept up, nothing downstream holds together for long.
My son told me last week that, just like on the airplane, I need to put my own oxygen mask on first. Then he added, with a smirk, that it’s okay to ask for a refill tank occasionally. I love that boy.
Most of us will reach out for help in a crisis. We’ll finally call someone when the ache has turned into a limp, or the labs come back abnormal. Maybe a situation with our mother or sister arose that made us wonder if we’re next. We put our mask on, but then the moment fades, and we go right back to filling everyone else’s tank, forgetting we need refills ourselves.
Getting well and staying well are not the same skill. Getting well is often about finding the one or two things that were out of balance and correcting them. Staying well isn’t a natural outflow from that moment. It must be an active alertness to noticing small shifts so they don’t become something larger.
A stressful season, or a change in weather, puts demands on your body that aren’t there the rest of the year. A good multivitamin is solid insurance most of the time, but it may not be enough during those seasons. I re-checked my own supplement protocol just last week because I’d started having trouble sleeping. The rest of my routine changed almost overnight. One shift, good or bad, ripples through the whole system.
Maybe you already know this because you’ve been through it. You found what was actually wrong, did the work, and felt what it’s like to have your energy and focus back, and you are not interested in ending up back where you started. Or maybe nothing has ever gone especially wrong for you, and that’s exactly the point. You’d rather stay ahead of it than wait to find out.
Either way, this is for you.
I found that just putting my own care on the calendar, another appointment in the line, was what actually made it happen. It stopped feeling like a big deal and became one more thing to get done, same as everything else.
Ongoing naturopathic support works the same way. It looks like a routine check-in, the same way your chiropractor or dentist is a standing appointment. It means catching the small concerns while they’re still small, and rechecking whether your supplements still match what your body actually needs this season, so that one ache never gets the chance to invite two friends.
Your body doesn’t heal out of nothing. It needs raw materials, and it needs those levels regularly checked to make sure you still have what you need. Just to make sure the tank doesn’t run dry before you do.
If you’re ready for your own refill, I’m here.
